Barr, James (Sr.) - Deceased - was with PSNC from 11th January 1873 when he joined as Second Mate and served on several vesels until 1890 when he died at sea as Master of the "John Elder". There is a history of James Senior's whole life which makes good reading. His Life history His son, also named James Barr, joined PSNC too. (See below)
Barr, James (Jr.) - Deceased - son of the above James Barr was also a Captain in the 1890s with PSNC on West Coast trade off Chile and latterly joined Furness-Withy. He was drowned when in command of the "Florence" (official number 95296) when she was wrecked at St Mary's Bay, Nova Scotia on 20 December 1912; the ship was a total loss.

When sailing out of Saint John N.B on "Nova Scotia" he saw ex "Escalante" high and dry on the breakwater; she had recently been taken over by the Greeks in 1971. Latterly lived in Co. Down. On 18th March 2022 Angus Shaw informed me that "Ernie" died suddenly at home in N. Ireland on the 7th.March. "A well respected and remembered Captain on the West Coast South America."

Had a varied career after that, incuding 1st Mates cert. vis a vis Manchester Liners and BP tankers. Never sat my Masters, never fancied the responsibility. left the sea in 1979, trained up in tech drawing and finished up as an Architectural Technologist. Retired in 2002 and now live on my 32 foot cruiser with my wife Gillian.

After 2nd Mate's in 1961 he re-joined PSNC 4th Officer on the tanker George Peacock for several months, before taking up shore employment with Caledonian Stevedoring Co.in Birkenhead.   He later joined the Birkenhead office of the Land Registry from where he eventually retired due to ill health in 2006. "Hello Tony - following your sad news about Phil Organ, I have received more of the same kind. This afternoon Dick's wife Jill phoned from their home in Cardiff to say that he passed away last Saturday, 16 May 2020.  : He had not enjoyed good health for the last two to three years and was in hospital. He also tested positive for Covid-19. Do you remember him? He was a Port Watch SLC in our junior term {at Warsash}. His special responsibilities included looking after the sailing gig "Mayo". By coincidence, he was also a particular friend of Phil Organ and I believe that both served apprenticeships with PSNC. Blagg, Fred - Deceased - worked for PSNC for 37 years on Orbita and Orduna latterly. He was Chief Engineer on the Orbita in 1937. He had an accident on board which resulted in his death. (Info from Grand-daughter.)

After Chief's Ticket did Home Trade relief work until in 1972 joined Wm. Wheelwright as Jr.2nd and Northern Star for "steam time" to obtain "Steam Endorsement". Home Trade and the guarantee dockings of Ortaga and Orbita. Declined offer of Asst. Superintendent job and left PSNC in 1974 to serve elsewhere. Now living in Kent in 2021.

The accident occurred approximately 7 miles north east of Copeland Island in the North Channel of the Irish Sea at 16:46 on 11 September 1947.

# Noble, Jimmy - Deceased - His daughter Sandy sent an email on 9th July 2017 saying he served with the company for many years and was Chief Engineer of the Reina Del Mar among others. She was pleased to see his photograph on the site. "As a child I had several round-the-land trips on Cotopaxi and Flamenco. Unfortunately, he was killed in an accident late 1970, not long after he retired from teaching at the Maritime School in Mann Island. I have retained a lot of his PSNC stuff and to this day carry on my key ring his chief engineer's brass tag!   As today is Sea Sunday I am also flying the PSNC flag on our flag pole."

I know I’ve missed a few Doxford powered ones. Then a transfer to Hadley’s as 2nd on Clymene, and finally the Cymbeline carrying coal so first trip with modern "UMS" Control Room and last with DC open board. When the miners went on strike I left the Merchant Navy and went offshore, spending 30 years on a dive boat called Orelia; 20 years there as Chief. Now living in Beaumaris.

# Short, Mike - served from Feb 1964 on Salamanca and Kenuta as Junior Engineer. Finished as 4th on Cotopaxi in 1967. Worked in R&D in the early days of oil industry in Inverness. Then engineer for Scottish Malt Distilleries running three local distilleries. Moved from there to Hexham, Northumberland to work for an NHS hospital as engineering technician, where he spent the rest of his working life. Retired aged 62 and now, aged 72, living in Allendale in the Pennines. He looks back with great pleasure at his time with P.S.N.C.

Owen, George Herbert "Cappy" - Senior Electrical Engineer - Deceased - joined PSNC January 1919 on shore staff. First appointment was to "La Paz" as Sr. Elect. and he sailed in this vessel until he joined the m.v. "Reina Del Pacifico" when under construction in Belfast. To quote his own words, "I enjoyed twenty-five years unbroken service in this vessel". It might constitute a record. He was withdrawn in June 1955 to take up a similar position in s.s. "Reina Del Mar" while she was under construction in Belfast until in 31st December 1957 he retired after thirty-eight years with the Company. Sadly he died seven years later in 1964.   See Obituaries

In 1980 I joined the United Arab Shipping Company. In 1987 joined the Sealink ferry company which ended up becoming P O Ferries in Dover until 2010 when I was forced to retire. (Dec 2022 - Brian Spears told me "I had been in touch with John for a few months back when I heard that he was suffering from cancer, but had hopes which clearly did not materialise. His son told me he had died on 4th October 2022 (I think that was the date). I sailed with him on the Reina del Mar where, if I remember correctly, he was the Crew Purser. We both went across to Belfast on her last voyage in March 1964. Being cheeky, he signed on as Chief Purser and I as Deputy Purser for the overnight trip. Happy Days!"
